Dovetailing HR with CSR : A Unique Initiative

Small Blackbird Plover removing tiny morsels of food from African Crocodile’s Teeth – the phenomenon, we were told as students in our school – is termed as Symbiosis.

Amazingly, the crocodile remains still while the small blackbird plover picks meat from its mouth. This cleans the crocodile’s teeth and prevents infection and what does the hungry bird do with the food thus picked? Eat them, of course. The former gets the teeth cleaned ‘free of cost ‘and the later gets the food – both the parties gain out of association.

The school room logic surprisingly applies in our day-to-day corporate world. Here it goes !!!!!

The CEO of a multinational after a meeting with his core team is headed for a crucial appointment at one of the famous 5-star hotels. He is scheduled to have a breakfast meeting with a senior manager from one of the units of his company. It is no doubt an ordinary meeting.

The senior manager, who has got a chance to have a breakfast meeting with the CEO, has won CEO’s time in an auction. For an hour, over piping hot idlis and fruit platters, CEO shares mentoring and leadership lessons that he is unlikely to forget in a hurry.

Few corporates have floated such first-of-its-kind employee engagement initiatives. The employees associated with these corporates are enjoying a taste of such unique corporate social responsibility (CSR ) peppered with human resources (HR ) management through an on-line auction with host of innovative bid items . One of them is “time with senior management".

An employee can bid for breakfast or dinner with Senior Vice President, lunch with Joint Managing Director at 5-star hotel or a golf session with Managing Director or a game of squash with Deputy General Manager or Country Head of any particular businesses in the group.

The biggest takeaways of the auction are : the cause, the connect and of course the great fun as the employees will always be ready and highly interested in bidding for senior management’s time. The proceeds from these bids are used for noble causes under the company’s CSR initiatives and the company on the other hand contributes equal amount, adding value to it.

This is a noble task and the auction would create an excitement among the employee community as this is not a hard core sell of CSR with brochures and leaflets  ; it is more than that in terms of employee ‘s direct connect with the senior management. The is one of its kind creatively innovative ideas, as seniors in their day to day lives rarely get to interact with employees who are not their direct reports.

These are the best interactions for employee engagement blend with unique CSR initiatives. Both the parties derive benefits out of such interactions .The employer’s motive of employee engagement and making their employee community socially aware through their CSR activities has symbiotic relationships with employees aspirations for a time with senior management.

I would call it ‘Dovetailing HR with CSR ‘.And my learning is that business corporations are not only economic institutions but are also social institutions that profoundly affect the communities in which they operate with larger responsibility to manage and engage their employee community effectively and constantly.

An Interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both.

What are your takeaways – think it through.

Mentor - The Ultimate Godfather

“Many receive advice, only the wise profit from it “ - Publilius Syrus, Syrian-Italian writer of maxims,1st Century.

Being born in these fortunate times, young people like us have opportunities and options everywhere but the one who can find an able charioteer to steer one’s life chariot through the intricacies of personal or professional landscape, is the luckiest one.

We look up to him. We admire him .We love him for his instinctual but insightful advices .We trust him .We have higher faith in his abilities. We try and copy him in everything he does. We want to be HIM someday.

The one who is right there when we need him the most.He is our ultimate Godfather.

He is the one who creates a lasting legacy and leaves greater impression in our mind. He remains kind and extremely supportive to us .He who helps us to take us through the path of self discovery and make us realized our true potentials. He has the biggest transferable commodities called Exposure and Knowledge and he shares it with us without any prejudice.

Everyone looks for such an ideal in someone whom he respects and follows throughout the life. An experienced and trusted advisor, who keeps on influencing and guiding us through. I firmly believe that he is our role model – someone we see on a daily basis and learn from him.

We call him / her our mentor, who can be anyone – Our Parents, The Boss, The Boss’s Boss, A Senior Colleague A Friend or A Relative – A Someone Close to us. One can have single or multiple mentors depending upon his or her choice.

The mentor’s advices are like a bag full of precious goodies. They work as sound framework for critical decision-making. These pieces of advice from the mentor remain the guiding force of our journey.

Mentorship is extremely important and immensely valuable in the journey of life. Lack of experience can only be compensated with a wise advice and inspiration from veterans.

Abilities wither under faultfinding, blossom under encouragement.” said Donald A. Laird

Mentoring supports and encourages people to maximise their potential, explore their hidden skills and improve their performance to be the person they want to be.

It has helped me to imbibe persistence, patience and resilience in both my personal and professional life.

I also have the one whom I look up to and I am sure you all must also be having the one to look up to.

Life Lesson :'Food For Mind and Soul - Good Habits'

Yesterday while talking to one of my colleagues in office,a small thought came up in mind ,made me write today on our habits, but what do we mean by habits. It means repetition of the same action in similar circumstances.

There are good and bad habits .We are all stereotyped creatures of habit. If we make good habits , good habits will make us as nothing is stronger than habit. This is an ancient old wisdom.

A few timeless words can teach us a very powerful lesson.Aristotle once said  " We are what we repeatedly do.Excellence, then,is not an act but a habit "

Habits can make us or break us depending upon its nature.Good habits are tend to make our lives smoother and easier.Bad habits are easy to make ,but extremely hard to end.Good habits ,on the other hand ,tend to take more time to make. But if one practices a good habit for 30 day straight, you are most likely to follow it for a long time.

We must first learn what makes a habit a habit and find the inspiration and discipline we need to overcome some of our negative habits and instill positive ones in our daily routine. Once we can identify the habit loop, good or bad, it is often not that hard to make a change.

Good habits change us for better and that is an empowering thought as good habits lie behind many of these positive changes. There are many but I am sharing here with what I feel most important to develop.
  • Be regular in whatever you do - get on a good schedule
  • Sleep well
  • Eat healthy diet and at regular intervals during the day .Understand that how making small changes in eating healthy can reap long-term dividends
  • Drink maximum water
  • Take SUN bath early morning - it rejuvenates your body
  • Learn to exercise and go for a walk
  • Develop a habit to play at least one sport and do it regularly
  • Read good stuff,be a regular reader and make reading your routine
  • Do good and be good and develop positive attitude
  • Practice gratitude
  • Respect the nature and environment
  • Practice good hygiene
  • Respect people ,treat well and love them too
  • Follow your passion and do what you like
  • Keep smiling - it solves many problems. You can lough out loudly - do not live as if the responsibility to manage the entire universe in on your shoulders.Life is a precious gift - enjoy it to the fullest.
  • Go on vacation and make it a routine
  • Respect and keep faith in the higher power - almighty
Practicing good habits in our lives, make us and our surrounding happy .There is no doubt that good habits make good human beings. There are many tall leaders ,who became our role models. The reason behind their greatness is, indulging themselves in good habits.

The real key to success is replacing destructive habits with successful habits. To overcome self-defeating attitudes and behaviors - we must understand that we have the power to choose and the power to change. We have the power let go old thinking and adopt the mindset of a champion.

Good habits are no doubt a healthy food for our soul and mind.Try and develop good habits and believe me they are worth being fanatical about.

Unleash the power of good habits

There Is A Brand Within – A Brand Called ‘ YOU ‘

The Holy Bible says, “ For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus,so that we ca n do the good things he planned for us long ago”

God is the ultimate craftsman and he does not create anything without value. You are a work of God and nothing but the highest and the best comes from his hands. There is something that he has planned for you.

The journey to create your personal brand starts with small steps.
  • First you have to get over the mindset that there is nothing UNIQUE about you.
  • You are special - feel so.
  • Start believing and respecting yourself
  • Fall in love with self first – This will also help you to be able to be loved.
  • Know your value by knowing yourself and unleash it

I personally believe that there is strong brand within – A Brand Called ‘ YOU ‘.Never underestimate yourself . Never let yesterday’s disappointments overshadow tomorrows' dreams.

Brian G.Dyson ,the former CEO The Coca-Cola Company had rightly said ' Value Has A Value Only If Its Value Is Valued "

Make some corner of the world distinctively yours .You are original. You  are rare. You are unique. You are a wonder. Only you can be you .You are a masterpiece...  you are Master's piece .

Celebrate Your Uniqueness
